Xavier’s Helminen takes fourth in Division 2, Appleton East’s Feller 22nd in D-1 at WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament

MADISON – Xavier’s Aliisa Helminen shot a second-round 77 to end up in fourth place in the Division 2 individual standings, and the Hawks finished fourth in the team standings as well as the 2023 WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament concluded Tuesday at University Ridge Golf Course.

Xavier finished with a two-day score of 734 to take fourth place, eight shots behind third-place Jefferson. Prescott won its fourth-straight Division 2 state title with a 704, three strokes in front of Green Bay Notre Dame.

Belle Kongshaug of Colfax/Elk Mound was the Division 2 individual champion after shooting a 77 on Tuesday and coming from three strokes back to finish with an overall score of 157, one shot ahead of Ava Pesha of Somerset and first-round leader Payton Schmidt of Jefferson. Helminen was another shot back to take fourth.

May Shimek shot an 89, Elizabeth Schubbe had a 91, Caroline VandenHeuvel had a 95 and Molly Martine had a 107 on Tuesday to finish off Xavier’s scoring. Schubbe ended up 16th (184) and May Shimek 19th (188) in the overall individual standings.

Appleton East’s Jaelyn Feller wrapped up play in the Division 1 tournament with an 80. Her score was four strokes better than Monday’s opening round, but she didn’t move any where in the standings, finishing in a tie for 22nd place.

Waunakee’s Izzy Stricker won her second-straight Division 1 individual title as she closed with a 73 to finish with a two-day total of 144, two shots better than Payton Haugen of Brookfield East.

Milwaukee Divine Savior Holy Angels won its first state title, taking the Division 1 crown with a two-round score of 641, just two shots in front of Waunakee. Kaukauna ended up seventh with a 686.
