Xavier girls volleyball finishes third, Appleton North fifth at West Bend Sprawl

WEST BEND – Xavier finished third and Appleton North fifth at the 24-team West Bend Sprawl in girls volleyball action on Friday and Saturday at West Bend East High School.

Xavier, which went 3-0 in pool play Friday, won its first two matches on Saturday, defeating Menomonee Falls 25-19, 25-22, and Brookfield East 19-25, 25-16, 15-7. The Hawks suffered a loss to Oconomowoc 18-25, 25-14, 15-9, in the Gold Division semifinals, before rebounding with a 25-21, 25-20, sweep of Hartland Arrowhead in the third-place match.

Appleton North went 2-1 in pool play on Friday, with its only loss coming at the hands of Xavier, went on to win three of four matches on Saturday to win the Silver Bracket and finish fifth overall in the tournament.

The Lightning lost its first match to Oconomowoc 25-19, 16-25, 15-13, before coming back to beat Franklin 25-16, 24-26, 15-9, Brookfield East 32-30, 25-18, and Manitowoc 18-25, 25-17, 15-13.

Mariah Potter had 87 assists and 17 service aces, Annika Kowalski had a team-best 23 kills and added seven aces and 14 digs, and Olivia Neumann and Halle Vande Hey each had 20 kills for Xavier.

Emerson Van Lannen had 156 assists, Ella Demetrician totaled 97 kills and 49 digs, and Maggie Hahnke had 50 digs and eight aces in the seven matches at the tournament for Appleton North.

Xavier will play a Bay Conference match at West De Pere on Tuesday.

Appleton North returns to Fox Valley Association play on Thursday at Fond du Lac.
